Modern Hungarian Textiles (Budapest, 1974)
A textil par excellence interieur-művészet. A formátum és színösszhatás szerint jól megválasztott és kellő helyen alkalmazott fali- és tértextil nemes dísze az otthonnak, és ünnepélyes hangulatot kölcsönöz a hivatalok, intézmények, vállalatok reprezentatív termeinek. A magyar textilművészek kiválóan ismerik a különféle anyagok — a gyapjú, pamut, kender, az egzotikus juta, sisál, a hessian — karakterét, járatosak a szövés, fonás, kötés, csomózás, hurkolás vagy az indonéz eredetű batik festés technikájában. Bátran alkalmaznak új, szintetikus anyagokat, s a fonalak és technikák keverésével újszerű hatások elérésére törekszenek. A testesen domborított szövés és reliefhatású applikálás eljárását merészen fejlesztették a figurális és absztrakt tértextilig. A csupán dekoratív motívumokkal, színfoltokkal ható szőnyeg-stílus mellett alkotóink kedvelik a festészettel rokon, képszerű ábrázolásmódot is. A szövött gobelineken és festett falkárpitokon felfedezhető a népi hímzések motívumainak az inspirációja éppúgy, mint a középkori, bizánci szőnyegszövésnek vagy a szecesszió kifinomult vonalkultúrájának az ösztönző hatása. A tradíció tisztelete nem gátolja a művészeket a korszerű formanyelv alakításában, ellenkezőleg. Tanulságait eredeti módon alkalmazzák műveik tervezésekor, amelyek éppúgy kifejezik korunk sajátos esztétikumát, mint a geometrikusán megszerkesztett vagy organikus oldottságú jelképes absztrakt kompozíciók. Textile work is pre-eminently an interior art. The form and colour combination of tapestries and carpets set in well chosen, appropriate places makes a very fine decoration in the home and gives a ceremonious and impressive atmosphere to the main halls of offices, institutes and companies. Hungarian textile artists are very familiar with the character of the different types of materials namely —wool, cotton, hemp and the exotic gunny, sisal and hessian. They are well acquainted with the various techniques of weaving, knitting, plaiting, crocheting, knotting and the Indonesian method of batik painting. New effects are produced by the bold use of synthetic materials and unusual combinations of thread and technique. Artists have introduced figurative and abstract textile work into the thickly embossed, weaving and relief-like methods of design. Apart from the application of decorative motifs and colours of the carpet style, Hungarian textile artists also use the pictorial method, which is closely related to painting. The woven gobelins and painted paper-hangings have been inspired and influenced by traditional embroidery to just the same extent as by mediaeval, Byzantine carpet weaving and the delicate lines of secessionist art. Respect for tradition has by no means restricted art in its modern form of expression. The teachings of traditional art are applied by artists in an original way when designing their work, which will express the style piculiar to the present day, in just the same way as the symbolic abstract compositions using geometries or vague simplicity.
