Recent Studies 1976-1977

RESEARCH IN BRIEF Among the non-viewers of Television Newsreel we find in the highest rate (70%) those who do not listen to the Evening Magazine either, and among those who watch 5 Television Newsreels relatively the fewest are people who do not listen to the Evening Magazine. These data illustrate that certain groups and strata acquire information from many Our study examined the viewers’ response to the series of TV competitions ’’Reporter Wanted” (1975) among viewers in the age group 14 to 30. Three questionnaires were sent successively to 1000 addresses from a national representative sample. The return rate was 34, 29 and 21 per cent, which corresponds the figures in similar studies. Our results do not quite represent the о pinion the examined age group on the programme; the questionnaires show a picture more favourable than the real average opinion, for it is likely that those who sent back the filled questionnaires were more interested in and responded more f avourablytothe programme. Nevertheless, the yare valuable feedback, providing much richer information on the actual response than e. g. viewers’ letters do. — In the examined age group quiz and competition programmes are popular, but ’’Reporter Wanted” does not belong to the most popular ones. sources, while others make use of less information channels and, in extreme cases, for some the mass media do not represent any source of information. This way, those who do not listen watch one of the evening news pro. grammes are likely to miss the other one as well. — Most respondents do not belong to the regular ’’letter-writers”, only 7 per cent answered that he or she generally wrote his opinion to programme producers. This figure seems very high because it is improbable that from 2 700 000 young people aged between 14 and 30 years, 200 000 would be regular correspondents of the Television. — The majority of the respondents (89%) is ready to vote to decide the outcome of the competition if requested to do so. — Our results also throw light on young people’s attitude to voting in general and on their opinions, in particular, whether the viewers’ opinions and votes are taken into account when deciding the final results in a television competition. — Two thirds of the young viewers liked the examined quarter-finals, one third partly liked it, partly not. The examined semifinal was more appreciated (87 per cent liked it, 12 per cent only partly.) 84 per cent Response to the 1975 TV Competition "Reporter Wanted" by Emőke Valkó, Mária Zsíros 0 1 2 3 4 5 In the whole sample Television Newsreels 0 Evening Magazine 70 41 46 50 53 21 48 1 Evening Magazine 16 18 22 24 21 19 20 2 Evening Magazines4 18 18 11 10 18 12 3 Evening Magazines4 6 6 7 8 148 4 Evening Magazines5 167 7 6 24 10 5 Evening Magazines1 1 1 1 2 4 2 Total : 100%100% 100%100% 100%100% 100% N = 158 116 156 187 415 166 1198
