JOHN OF CAPISTRANO, THE PREACHERAND MIRACLE-MAKING LIVING SAINT IN HUNGARY By Gábor Klaniczay SUMMARY The preaching tour that John of Capistrano made between 1451 and 1456 „beyond the Alps” is one of the most spectacular series of events in the history of late medieval preaching. While a lot is known about his performance on the pulpit and the connected events all over Austria, Germany, Silesia and Little Poland, our knowledge about the last five months of John’s life, when he proclaimed the crusade against the Ottomans in defence of the Hungarian Kingdom, is much more limited. No written text, or at least a reportatio prepared by one of his listeners, of the sermons he made in Hungary has survived. It is only from second-hand documents, such as the biographical reports of Giovanni Tagliacozzo, Girolamo da Udine, Niccolo da Fara and Christophoro Varese, as well as the letters of John of Capistrano himself, that the derails of the latter’s activities in Hungary can be reconstructed. It is to this reconstruction that a more solid support than that offerred by the previous partial editions is provided by the critical edition of the correspondence made by the participants of the project led by György Galamb. 256
