28. OLDAL CoaIÍTÍON ÁTTENcIs WllÍTE HOUSE Meetínq on Bosnía WASHINGTON - The Hungarian-American Coalition joined other members of the Central and East European Coalition in a meeting at the White House with Assistant Secretary of State Richard Holbrooke to discuss the Bosnian Peace Agreement. Also present were Daniel Fried, Special Assistant to the President for Central and East European Affairs, Alexander Vershbow, Special Assistant to the President for European Affairs, Alexis M. Herman, Assistant to the President and Director of Public Liaison, and Marilyn DiGiacobbe, Associate Director for Public Liaison. The Coalition was represented by Dr. Edward Chaszar and Frank Koszorús, Jr. During the meeting, Ambassador Holbrooke noted that Hungary’s and other Central European countries' participation in NATO's Bosnian peacekeeping mission will have a "profound effect" on their efforts to become members of that alliance. Mr. Koszorús expressed the Coalition's support for continued United States involvement in Central Europe. He also noted that the Administration must recognize that the most effective means of defusing tensions and potential disputes in Central Europe is to ensure the rights of national minorities. He urged the Administration to assume a vigorous role in promoting minority rights in the region and halting any manifestations of ethnic cleansing, including the socalled "humanitarian assistance" program whereby Serbian refugees displace ethnic Hungarian residents in Voivodina. Mr. Holbrooke stated that his office is prepared to investigate any instances of ethnic cleansing that are brought to his attention. Mr. Vershbow added that the Peace Agreement contemplates resettlement of refugees to their homes. * * * All those who wish more information are encouraged to contact the Hungarian American Coalition's Washington office at the following address: 818 Connecticut Avenue, NW, Suite 850, Washington, DC 20006, USA; phone (202) 296- 9505, fax(202)775-5175;and visit the Coalition's homepage in the World Wide Web: http:/ /www.hungary.com/hac. MemoríaI foR JózsEf AntaU BUDAPEST - On the occasion of the second anniversary of József Antall's death, the Hungarian Piarist Student Federation held memorial services in a chapel. The widow of the former Prime Minister and Ervin Szűcs, the Vice- President of the Federation, laid a wreath on Antall's commemorative plaque. In his memorial speech, Szűcs praised Antall for creating a constitutional, democratic, and free Hungary. In Szücs's view, Antall's legacy was not safeguarded and the present-day Hungary is characterized by discord. Szűcs charges those in power with mutilating Antall's achievements and with destroying the country's hard-won prestige at home and abroad. Antall's party - the Hungarian Democratic Forum - also paid tribute to its dead leader. The party's president, Lajos Für, talked about the hard job Antall faced following his election as he tried to form a cabinet with people without previous government experience. Writing in the New Hungary, former Foreign Minister Géza Jeszenszky remembered Antall by saying, "Many of his former followers misuse [Antall's] name. They advocate domestic and foreign policies which are contrary to [Antall's] views and basically betray his legacy. Csurka's and Torgyán's policies cannot be reconciled with Antall's Smallholders' background and ideas..." EcONOMÍC PROqNOSES BUDAPEST - According to the Economic Research Corporation, Hungary's foreign and domestic economicfinancial balance is improving. At the same time, when compared to last year, the country's rate of economic growth has decreased as have investments. Moreover, inflation remains high while people's incomes have decreased significantly, with the rate of decrease being greater than one year ago. Therefore, the Economic Research Corporation concluded that the improvement in the economic-financial balance is not the result of economic development but is due to a curbing of the domestic consumption. The trade balance continues to improve steadily. Data indicate that the trade deficit stood at 534 million dollars in the spring but, by fall, Hungary enjoyed a trade surplus. As viewed from abroad, the soundness of Hungary's economy, after deteriorating at the beginning of the year, appears to be improving. Hungary has the lowest expected growth among the Visegrád countries. This unfavorable situation can be blamed on the country's large foreign debt and the deficiencies in the Bokros package of strict economic measures. The leading economies in the region are the Czech Republic, Slovenia, and Poland. □ AMERIKAI MAGYAR NÉPSZAVA/SZABADSÁG December 22,1995, Friday On t^e NeecI to Pay Attentíon... SZEGED - A representa- tive of the Christian Democratic Party from Szeged recently took the floor at a meeting and, without offering an explanation, proposed that 20 million forints be allocated to him and his family. Of the thirty-one party members at the meeting, ten voted to award twenty million forints to the Szeged representative, ten abstained from voting, and eleven voted against the proposal. As it turns out, the Szeged representative was not motivated by greed; instead, he was testing whether his colleagues were paying attention to the measure on which they were voting. UNEMployMENT Increases BUDAPEST - During the month of November, the number of registered unemployed increased to 484 thousand. At the same timq, the unemployment rate grew to 1Q.2 percent from 10 percent in October. NyElvÉdEIM És A NEMZET, olvASSON MAGyAR kÖNyvEt!
