The musical arrangements performed were cho­sen by George Zaduban,musical director of the Ensemble.Their composers are famous Hungarian contemporaries.(Z.Kodály died in 1967) GYPSY M0CKER( "Túrót eszik a cigány")(Z.Kodály) KOLOZSVÁROS (L.Halmos) THREE FOLKSONGS(J.Adám) SZÉKI MUZSIKA(Music from Szék)(l.Gulyás) SZELES A BALATQN(how wide is the Balaton) and (B.Vavrinecz) MUSIC IN HONOUR OF COUNT HADIK(J.Bihari) In this article focus is on the Ensemble's history.lt began as a male choir with 30 mem­bers in I960.A female choir,dance group and orchestra were added through the next three years.The choir members receive thorough train­ing in all aspects of choral singing - includ­ing theory and historical background of their repertoir. The three sections of the ensemble make an excellently integrated unit,performing a bal­anced and fascinating program of songs and dances rooted in ancient tradition.This fact made the ensemble one of the leaders in the revival of ethnic arts in Toronto.lt is a mem­ber of the Community Folk Art Council of met­ropolitan Toronto.The members place great em­phasis on sharing their culture with other Ca­nadians.They believe,that understanding and re­specting the way of life of other groups is the secret of solving the problems of society. (The information for this article is taken from the spring 1975 publication about the KODÁLY Ena) ^^i^^i^^l^^HlJudith Magyar GEORGIA ZADUBAn.the Artistic Director of the KODÁLY Folk_ensemble of Toronto was born In 1931,in Gödöllő,Hungary. He studied in the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music),in Budapest under Zoltán Kodály(folk music),Janos Visky(composition)and Bela Ambro­­zy(piano). He gained considerable experience in com­position and conducting,while in Hungary. Mr.Zaduban emigrated to Canada after 1956. In I960 he organized the KODÁLY Ensemble.The contribution which Mr.Zaduban made to Canadi­an-Hungarian culture is not easily measured. During the past 15 years of rough sailing,he has guided the KODÁLYEnsemble to success with enthusiasm and hard work. He created the largest and one of the best Hungarian folk ensembles in the Western World. Through the KODÁLY Ensemble.George zadubán created Hungarian folklore-history and he will be remembered for it. KÁLMÁN PREIS ZIGER, Dance director of KODÁLY ErB. He grew to know folk dancing through the Kodály Ensemble.He joined as dancer in 1963 and be­came soloist in 1967. He spent a year in pungary,observing amateur and professional groups,experiencing original folk events in villages.On his return,he stud­ied modern dance and choreography. He is the leader of the Dancegroup and chor­eographer since 1972. Kálmán Magyar (WX(«X(KX(«pontozó 75 «JXttXWXO» First major HUNGARIAN FOLK DANCE COMPETI­TION in North America,to be held on Sept.13, WF5 at the GARDEN STATE ARTS CENTER, in HOLMDEL,N.J.(Exit life on the Garden State Pkwy),from 12-3 pm, in conjunction with the HUNGARIAN FESTIVAL. Eligibility for PONTOZÓ '75: 1. A performing group,which performs Hun­garian folk dances regularly and consists of at least 4 couples or 8 dancers. 2. Who can perform at least 2 choreographed dances for at least 10 minutes Purposes of PONTOZÓ '75 1. To bring Hungarian folk dancers together. 2. To give help and ideas to folk dance groups for new repertoirs. 3. To give direction and define the correct road to follow by Hungarian folk dance groups in order to represent true Hungarian folklore. 4. To assist groups in obtaining more knowledge and experience in Hungarian folk dancing. Directors: Director of PONTOZÓ '75:Kálmán Magyar Director of jury: Andor Czompé Due to the brievity of time allocated to the competition,only 6 competing and 2 non-compe­ting groups could be invited to PONTOZÓ '75. The groups which were not invited this year, will be given preference in 1976,since PONTOZÓ aims to be a yearly event.
