This village, locatedNortheast of Bu­dapest, is part of the Palóc region. Top: colorfully embroidered silk.Reaches the waist, straight cut. Long narrow sleeves, standing collar. Closes in front, with colored buttons. Both sides of the front-opening are decorated with stitched down, flat pleats. The back and the cuffs are hemmed with a narrow ribbon or lace. Shawl: flowered pattern cashmere,fringed. Gathered into pleats around the neck. Skirtrmade of 8 widths of light wool or si­milar fabric. Tightly gathered or pleated. Bottom hemmed with 1/4" wide contrasting colored cashmere or woolen ribbon. Skirt embroidered with small flowers. ( can be bought patterned already) Top&skirt color combinations: Blue skirt, multi-colored or green flower patterned,red hem----black top with mul­ticolored pattern Green skirt with blue or multicolored pat­tern, red hem----black top Red skirt with blue or multicolored flower pattern, red hem----Dlack or white top. Dark-red skirt, multi - colored pattern, blue or green hem----black top, blue flow­er pattern Black skirt, multicolored or green flower pattern, red hem-----green top with blue flower pattern. Apron: blue or black satin-cloth( klott) 1 width. Bottom decorated with narrow stripe. Tied with green, red or blue nar­row ribbon. Necklace: 4-5 rows of beads, tied in back with colored ribbon. Blue beads with vhite ribbon, with white blouse. Red beads with blue tie and black blouse. Handkerchief : eylet lace or embroidered Footwear: white stockings, black shoes. Headwear :combed back, center part braid­ed and held together at the crown, then braided with rest of hair from the neck. Tied with colored ribbon on the bottom. The four dancers, members of the ma­jor Marosvásárhely Dance Ensemble,Ma­rika Lorincz, Hedy Szász, János Szóllósy and Sándor Tófalvi were all excellent performers and exhibited great showmanship and skill. However, some of the dances they presented were somewhat to be desired in authenticity. ,Our favorites were NyárádmentiF or­­gatos (Twirling Dance from Nyarad Re­gion), Szentiványi Táncok (Dances from Szentivany) and Köröndi Táncok (Dances from Korond). The others would have been m$re successful had they been performed by a large group. The major attraction of the show, howe­ver, was not the dancing but the singing and literary recitals. Singers Sándor Széllyes and Er­zsébet Toth were favorably received by the audience. Their repertoir included Kodály and Bartók folk song arrangements as well as some heart-stirring authentic material. The humorous recitals by Sán­dor Szellyes of the sagas of a simple peasant in a technically changing world raised many a hearty laugh. Erzsébet A d á m * 1 * * IV. V. s material gave the highlight of the evening. Her intricate presentations of Hungarian poems, thrill­­ingly and meaningfully assembled folk­­verse caleidoscopes were outstanding. As an artist, she has the ability to transform her mood from dramatic to melancholic, from sad to joyous, from loving to hate­ful, as the text requires. In total retrospect, something was lack­ing from this performance of Hungarian culture from Transylvania, for example the excitement of Transylvanian folk mu­sic, which we learned to love so much in recent years. Although Judith Birta­­lan pianist, did an excellent job accom­panying the performers, we feel that a small string band ( banda) would have made the show a lot more exciting. We would like to point out again, that it was in fact a great accomplishment that the Marosvásárhely Group could visit the North American continent. We welcomed them warmly and with admiration.lt has to be kept in mind, that the artistic work­ing conditions are far from being ideal for the Ensemble back home and that they are limited in the scope of their presentations. Hopefully, in the not too distant future we may welcome the Marosvásárhely En­semble again on our stages and at that time we may enjoy a presentation of more authentic Hungarian folk material, which has been so beautifully preserved among the Hungarian and Székely (Seckler) popu­lation of Transylvania.
