NEWS On May 4th, 1980, the birth date of Mihály Vörösmarty , the famous Hungarian poet of the 19th century, a Poetry Recital Contest was held in Kálvin Hall of the Hungarian Reformed Church, Passaic,NJ. The recital, intended to promote and improve the knowledge of Hungarian literature among youngsters, drew 47 entrants from Hungarian schools of the New York Metropolitan area. Ranging in age from 4 to 18, the contestants presented approximately 100 poems to an unexpectedly large audience of parents, teachers and friends. The contest was judged by a jury of educators and prizes were awarded to the winners. Each participant also received a certificate. The event, first of its kind, opened up a new field, where Hungarian identity can successfully be preserved among the younger generation. Elemer Horvath, Member of the Contest's Jury I , , Mrs. Zsuzsa Király, wife of the Rev. Zoltán Király of the Passaic Hungarian Reformed Church, first brought forth the idea, fashioned after the example of Pontozo Hungarian Folk Dance Festival, of establishing such an event. Her dedication and efforts were invaluable means towards having made the Recital Contest in Passaic possible. It is hoped that in time it will also become a regular and accepted event in the Hungarian communities throughout Northern A- merica.# (J.M.
