WORLD PRESS PHOTO ■ The World Press Photo Foundation, set up in Amsterdam in 1995, is 40 years old this year. Only 42 photo reporters sent their work to the first international competition, but in 1995 as many as 3000 reporters sent 29 885 photos to Amsterdam. It took a whole week for the nine/member international jury (each a famous press representative) to select the best of the photos sent from 97 countries of the world. ■ The world Press Photo exhibition was the symbol of free flow of information over the decades of political division. Today, the exhibition still preserves its importance, even if its role has changed. While the pictures of the dramatic events of our hasty world only flash up on our TV screen for a few seconds, we can spend minutes in front of the tableaus of the World Press Photo exhibition. Such an experience only comes in Hungary in exhibition rooms, as magazines with photo reports have disappeared from the newspaper stands. ■ Through its competitions and exhibitions, the World Press Photo has become the most important international organization. Preference is given to reporter attitudes that positive standpoint. Given out upsidedown world, the jury is especially thankful for pictures depicting human contacts. At the same time, we should not forget that photo reporters many times risk their life to inform the public of dramatic and hidden events. ■ On the occasion of the World Press Photo competition in 1995 the jury paid tribute to the 115 journalist who sacrificed their lives for giving accurate information in 1994. (Another 104 colleagues are still in prison.) This is why, for professional solidarity, the members of the jury call the attention of all national and international authorities to respect and safeguard the freedom of press. The main prize entitled “The press photo of the year” and many other prize-winning photos have become know as a symbol of our present-time history. ■ However, the World Press Photo not only thinks of the present in order to learn the paper readers of the future the international jury will also set up another 9-member international children’s jury to decide on the best photo of the year through children’s eyes. Hungarian children have participated in this young jury for six years. The children are selected trough a tender by the editorial house of Népszabadság TV Magazin together with the Hercgd Agency. ■ Every year, the World Press Pnoto exhibits the prize-winning collection at seventy spots in 40 countries. The number of visitors is above one million. The World Press Photo calendar is published in ten thousands copies. The World Press Photo oundation is supported in the Netherlands, »among other companies, by Kodak, KLM and Canon. The main sponsor of the 1995 exhibition in Hungary was Népszabadság, also supported by Interart and Westel. Tamás Révész ■ A World Press Photo Foundation ebben az évben 40 éves. Az alapítvány 1955-ben alakult Amszterdamban. Első nemzetközi pályázatára mindössze 42 fotóriporter küldte el munkáját. 1995-ben már közel 3000 riporter 29. 885 fényképpel képviseltette magát Amszterdamban. A világ 97 országából elküldött fényképekből képriportokból kilenc tagú nemzetközi zsűri - mindegyike a sajtó rangos képviselője - egy teljes hetet szánt a legjobb képek kiválasztására. ■ A World Press Photo kiállítás a politikai megosztottság évtizedeiben az információ szabad áramlásának volt szimbóluma. A kiállítás ma sem vesztett jelentőségéből, ha szerepe meg is változott. Rohanó világunk drámai eseményeinek képei csupán másodpercekre villannak fel a televízió képernyőin, míg a World Press Photo kiállításának tablói előtt akár percekig is elmerenghetünk. Felfordult világunkban a humánus emberi kapcsolatokat sugárzó képekért a zsűri külön hálás. év folyamán életüket áldozták a pontos tájékoztatás oltárán. A gyermekek pályázat alapján történő kiválasztását a Népszabadság TV Magazin szerkesztősége a Herald Ügynökséggel együtt szervezi. ■ A World Press Photo negyven országban, hetven helyszínen állítja ki minden évben a nyertes kollekciót. Látogatóinak száma meghaladja az egy milliót. Évkönyve sok tízezer példányban jelenik meg. ■ A World Press Photo Alapítványt Hollandiában többek között támogatja: a Kodak, a KLM, a Canon.
