Photo from the Pest side. The new bridge undergoing a load test. A silver-white, graceful span over the Danube The German fascists in the course of their retreat blew up all Budapest bridges over the Danube. Before their wanton destruction there were two railway and five road bridges between Buda and Pest. The new Elisabeth Bridge was the last of the Danube bridges to be reconstructed. It was tsK nty months ago that I first visited the builders of the Elisabeth Bridge, and since then I have been to see them regularly every month, to • tell my radio listeners about their work, their successes and difficulties and the results of their efforts. “The designers and builders wanted something new and modern in place of the old. That is why we chose to construct a cable bridge,” said Pál Sávoly the designer of the bridge and winner of the Kossuth Prize, when we first met. “The new Elisabeth Bridge will be more beautiful and graceful than the old. 27.5 metres wide, the bridge will be suspended on two bundles of cables, each consisting of 61 composite, 54.4 millimetre diameter cables. The perpendicular supports of the roadway will be 68 millimetre diameter cables.” THE NEW ELISABETH BRIDGE The old bridge blown up by the fascists.
