Dear Reader, e would like to form your idea and impressions on Sándor Petőfi with this issue. With interviews, essays, interpretations and confessions by contemporary writers we search for the reasons of the poet’s outstanding attractiveness who was born two hundred years ago. How can we understand and update Petőfi's iconic role in literary history and our national memory with professional aspects? Giving a responsible answer to this question is our aim during the anniversary. Besides drawing an up-to-date and versatile portrait we would like to have a critical analysis of the Petőfi-cult. We aim to present the paradigm-changing research results from the experts of the period, and to focus on new aspects, for example presenting Júlia Szendrey’s oeuvre, the relations with contemporaries, and the less known prose and drama texts. This issue also presents the afterlife of the oeuvre, its pedagogical, musical, film, and pop cultural aspects, and the rethinking of the basic questions of 19th-century Hungarian literature: among others romanticism, politics, and folk traditions.
