The Society's regular publications, sent to all members, offer comprehensive coverage of the design world both nationally and internationally. Preview, the Society's newsletter, edited by Paul Budd, rounds up professional and industry news eight times a year, and gives advance notice of the extensive programme of events, seminars and exhibitions run by the Society. Preview underwent a successful face-lift in 1991, thanks to designer David Hillman FCSD at Pentagram. Design Review is the new highly successful quarterly magazine of the CSD, published jointly by the Society and Wordsearch Ltd, publishers of Blueprint and Eye magazines. Edited by Deyan Sudjic, the magazine offers a wide perspective on design, publishing in-depth and provocative journalism, as well as rounding up news and comment from throughout the world. Design Review also publishes the Minerva Awards shortlists featuring the CSD's selection of the best contemporary design projects. Comments and correspondence should be addressed for Preview to Paul Budd, CSD Press Officer and for Design Review to Deyan Sudjic, 26 Cramer Street, London WIM 3HE, telephone 071 486 7419, fax 071 486 1451. Events and training A total of 49 events and seminars took place during 1991. Training is a vital concern for all those in the design community. The CSD's commitment to training provision is reflected in both its policy and research work - notably in the Developing Design Excellence project launched in 1991- and the programme of events it runs throughout the year. Under the broad banner of continuing professional development a wide range of professional seminars have been offered to designers. The Society's pricing policy for such events offers easy access to training to all design professionals, and has resulted in strong attendance at virtually all planned events, despite the recessionary climate. As the Society develops its policy on continuing professional development and design management, the events programme will continue to expand, both in London and throughout the UK. Professional seminars run in 1991 were: • Marketing of design services • Improving your creativity • Computing and interior design • Product liability • Contracting • Presentation skills • Collecting money from your client • Designing products: the environmental perspective (funded by the Department of T rade and Industry) • Designers in XPress • New directions • Green design in education Careers orientated events, aimed largely at students and recent graduates, form an ongoing programme of activity for the Society. Three well established events continue to run annually: the 'Real World' seminars for final year students studying Graphic, Interior and Product design, the 'Just the Job' careers session, and the 'Setting up on your own' seminar for graduates and designers starting their own businesses. Each event has been supported magnificently by senior members of the profession, who have spared the time to share their expertise and experience with young designers. A regular Portfolio Surgery session, where young designers can discuss their portfolio with a senior designer within the field on an informal basis, takes place throughout the year. Full information on Portfolio Surgeries is available from Michelle Gillard in the Membership Department.
