NETWORK NEWS BATIK 2003 IN GHENT - ART IN MOTION Exhibition from 16.5. - 17.8.03 at the Museum voor Industriële Archéologie en Textiel (MIAT), Minnemeers 9, B-9000 Ghent The international community of batik artists has become active again. After the Hanover "Batik of Change” and the batik exhibition of Saitama City, Japan, both shown in 2002, another exhibition in­volving 51 artists from 22 coun­tries will be staged in Ghent. Like the 1999 "Batik Gathering Now and Then”, the forthcoming event is organised by ETN member Rita Trefois; it will be accompanied by eight lectures, six workshops and demonstrations. Biennial of Minia­ture Textiles will be shown as a tri­ennial exhibition from 26th June to 31st August 2003. As before, the organisers are the Budapest Cultur­al Foundation of Textile Art in con­junction with the Szombathely Art Gallery, both ETN members. Like MIXED NEWS TECHTEXTIL SYMPOSIUM This symposium will take place in the context of the eponymous fair from 7th to 8th April 2003 at the Frankfurt exhibition centre. It will feature some 90 lectures providing practice-related and practice-ori­ented contributions to the commu­nication between academics and producers and manufacturers. There will be six thematic areas: 1) Markets and Visions; 2) New Textiles - New Technologies; 3) Smart Textiles; 4) Innovative Building; 5) Mobile Textiles; 6) Personal Security. A "round table” for questions and answers has been planned for the third subject area, “smart tex­tiles”. The ad­dress: Artextures 2003, Elisabeth Gerrey, 12 rue Pécard, F-91190 Gif s/Yvette Deadline: 1 June 2003 INTERNATIONAL LACE AND EMBROIDERY FORUM The association "Italia Invita” in Rimini/Italy is organising a large lace-makers and embroiderers meeting at the Centro Congressi Europa in Lugofiume Uso, North Rimini, from 9th to 11th May 2003. The programme includes lectures by well-known Italian artists and art historians, for ex­ample Wanda Casaril, Gina Morandini, Roberta Orsi Landini and Thessy Schoenholzer Nichols, who will give talks on Italy’s cultural heritage with re­gard to lacemaking and embroi­dery. All lectures will be translat­ed into English, French and Ger­man. Furthermore, there will be courses in Italian techniques, such as different kinds of bobbin lace and special embroidery tech­niques (e.g. Sicilian open-work and Assisi embroidery). There will also be slide shows, presen­tations, "meeting points” on vari­ous subjects and excursions to Italian museums with important textile collections, to the Poldi Pezzoli Museum in Milan, the Gandini Collection in Modena, the Lace Museum of Rapallo and the Burano Museum in Venice. Partici­pants will also have an opportunity to visit a dealers market and a mu­seum shop during the event. A Romagna evening with din­ner and entertainment will com­plete this extraordinary pro­gramme. The event is noteworthy due to the high calibre of the lec­turers, the richness of the events on offer, the thoroughness of the organisation and the economi­cally priced participants fees (€410 for all lectures, courses, overnight stays and meals). Paper artists who would like to participate in the Holland Paper Biennial 2004 are requested to forward the docu­mentation (slides/photographs/ catalogues) of their latest work and an updated c.v., or any other materials they would like to sub­mit, to the Rijswijk Museum. In September 2003 a jury will make a selection of the contributions and in October/November 2003 the artists will be informed if their work has been selected.
