SCULPTURE NEW IDEAS In MEDALLIC SCULPTURE NEW IDEAS In MEDALLIC SCULPTURE NEW IDEAS in MEDALLIC SCULPTURE Beginning in 1998, New Ideas in Medallic Sculpture has been an annual event at Medialia ... Rack and Hamper Gallery, New York, USA. I created this annual exhibition to encourage students to become involved with art on a professional level. The exhibition. New Ideas in Medallic Sculpture is an annual project for New Approach, Inc. The mission of New Approach is to promote emerging artists, as well as to encourage public awareness and exposure to unconventional medallic art. We were granted non-profit status in New York State. New Approach is made possible by the generous support of patrons, internationally. The New Ideas in Medallic Sculpture exhibitions are comprised of the work of young individuals studying art in the university setting. Some of these artists have extensive experience with medallic craft, while others are new to this artistic discipline. And while some universities have medallic art courses as part of their art curriculum, others do not. Particularly at The University of the Arts visions of medallic art are shaped by the individual artists course of study. Diversity of work in the New Approach exhibitions reflects the range of formal artistic training within each participating university. The genesis of the non-profit organization New Approach began with a joint exhibition of medallic art from students of Faculdade de Belas-Artes da Universidade de Lisboa and the The University of the Arts, in 1998. This first collaboration began at Medialia, then travelled to both Pennsylvania, and Lisboa, Portugal. Subsequently, New Approach has evolved into a threeuniversity exhibition with The University of the Arts and Faculdade de Belas-Artes da Universidade de Lisboa being the host universities, beginning in 2001. Selection of work and orchestration of details for the joint exhibitions is the responsibility of one faculty member at each university. Expenditures are shared by each university. The universities that have exhibited with University of the Arts are: 1998- 1999 Faculdade de Belas-Artes da Universidade de Lisboa, Portugal 1999- 2000 Osaka University of Arts, Japan 2000- 2001 Faculdade de Belas-Artes da Universidade de Lisboa, Portugal 2001- 2002 Burg Glebichentein-Hochshule für kunst und Hale, Germany 2002- 2003 Türke Polytechnic Arts Academy, Finland 2003- 2004 Kink) University, Osaka, Japan 2004- 2005 Saint-Petersburg State Artistic Industrial Academy, Russia For this special exhibit, I selected 27 artists who have shown in both current and previous New Ideas exhibitions. Some works were previously shown, and others were created specifically for this exhibition. The commemorative medals from each exhibition are commissioned by New Approach. I believe the work is unique and contributes to medallic art in both technical facility and aesthetic content. I would like to give special thanks to João Duarte whose continued support has helped bring this special exhibition and annual event to fruition. Mashiko Nakashima Director, Medialia ...
