EZER ÉV! R övid kor az idő soha meg nem pihenő folyamában és mégis mily óriási időszak egy nemzet fejlődéstörténetében ! Ezer év viharzott el azóta, hogy a nemes magyar nép elhagyván ős hazáját, Árpád a honalapító vezérlete alatt átlépte ez erdős, bérezés, napsugaras ország határait s millió szivek ujjonganak most a roppant jelentőségű évforduló felé. Mert ime, nemzetek és népek születtek és haltak el ez ezer esztendő alatt. A múlt idők ölében sok nemzet tragikus sorsa van eltemetve ; forradalmak és testvérháborúk dúltak az egyes népek között s nem egy törzs bukott le a fényes magaslatról, a melyen állott. A korszakok romjain uj korszakok támadtak, a népek sírján uj népek keletkeztek, de Magyarország erősen állott e harezok és viharok közepette. Életfájának gyökerei mélyek és erősek valának, mint a nemzet lelke. Igaz, hogy a mióta Árpád e szép hazát elfoglalta, mindig külső harezok és belső villongások tépték a nemzet szivét ; török-tatár pusztította, testvérharezok rázkódtatták meg az országot, de a magyar nép szent törekvéssel óvta meg nemzeti jellegét, a honszeretet és nagyjainak kultuszát, ősi tradiczioit és nagygyá lett külső és belső ellenségei daczára. E folytonos harezok sok ideig akadályozták meg a kultúra fejlődését. Hosszú századokon t ugaron hevert a nemzet sok nemes tehetsége, para, kereskedelme, művészete és irodalma nessze elmaradt a többi európai kulturállamok nögött. De mindezt pótolta az utolsó évtizedekben. A nemzeti újjászületés nagy korszaka óta óriási léptekkel haladt a kultúra eszménye felé s ma már dicsőségesen uralkodó I. Ferencz József király ideje alatt büszkén mérközhetik a többi nemzettel. Úgyszólván egy ugrással érte el azt, a mit más nemzet csak százados fejlődéssel érhet el. És minden évtized újabb diadalt jelent a nemzet életében. E diszmű kiadója tiz esztendeig volt távol Magyarországtól ; ezalatt bejárta az ó és uj világ minden nevezetes országait és városait, látta a modern nagy kulturnemzetek roppant fejlődését és ime, mire visszatért tiz esztendő után, mily örömteljes meglepetés várt rá. Ott látta a nemzetet azon a magaslaton, a melyen a többi nagy nemzet állt ; látta, hogy a nemzetet saját benső ereje, nemzeti egyénisége és temperamentuma emelték és tették képessé arra, hogy lépést tartson a többi kulturnemzettel. Kereskedelme, ipara, irodalma, művészete mind egyenrangú a többivel. A főváros pompás fölvirágzása, építkezése és mindaz, a mi egy országot nagygyá, boldoggá és gazdaggá tesz, föltalálható ez országban. Ez bírta rá e sorok íróját, hogy e diszalbumot kiadja a milleniumi kiállítás alkalmára, a mikor itt a nemzet ki fogja tárni mindazt, a mit produkálni tudott. Kiadta e diszmüvet a magyar kormány, a magyar kir. államvasutak és a kiállítás igazgatóságának támogatásával és közreműködésével, hogy miután a nyelv szegény a fejlődés e nagyságát leírni, képekben mutassa meg a külföldnek, hogy mire képes egy nemzet rövid évtizedek alatt. Hadd jöjjön ide a franczia, az angol, az olasz, a német és valamennyi, a ki saját nemzetének a nagyságára büszke, és bámulja meg a kiállítás csodáit s a nemzet nagy életrevalóságát. , Laurendc Gyula. TAUSEND JAHRE! S "“ in kurzer Abschnitt in dem nimmer ruhenden Strome der Zeit, und doch welch’ ein riesiger Zeitraum in der Entwickelungsgeschichte einer Nation! Tausend Jahre stürmten vorüber, seitdem das edle Ungarnvolk unter der Führung des Helden Árpád sein altes Vaterland verhess und die Gemarkungen dieses waldigen, felsigen und strahlenden Landes überschritt. Die Herzen von Millionen und Abermillionen jubeln jetzt dem vielbedeutenden Jubiläumsjahre entgegen. Denn siehe da! Völker und Nationen entstanden und starben in diesen tausend Jahren ; im Schosse der Vergangenheit sind manche tragische Schicksale grosser Völker begraben. Revolutionen und Bruderkriege sah man erstehen und gar viele Stämme stürzten herab von der glänzenden Höhe, die sie erklommen. An den Ruinen der Zeiten, am Grabe der Völker erhoben sich neue, um neuen Kämpfen entgegenzugehen ; doch Ungarn stand fest inmitten dieser Kämpfe und Stürme. Wohl ist es wahr, dass seit Árpád dieses schöne Vaterland erobert, fortwährende äussere und innere Kämpfe das Land durchwühlten. Bruderkriege erschütterten seine Völker, doch der Ungar wahrte mit heiligem Eifer seinen nationalen Charakter,stand treue Wache über dem Kultus hehrer Vaterlandsliebe und ward gross, trotz seiner zahlreichen inneren und äusseren Feinde. Diese Kämpfe hinderten lange Zeit die Entwickelung der Kultur. Industrie, Handel, Kunst und Literatur blieben weit zurück hinter jenen der anderen europäischen Kulturstaaten. Doch alles das holte Ungarn in den letzten Decennien ein. Seit der grossen Zeit seiner nationalen Wiedergeburt ging das Land mit riesigen Schritten und selbstbewusst seinen hohen Kulturaufgaben entgegen und stolz kann es sich heute mit den anderen Völkern messen. Es erreichte sozusagen mit einem Sprung, was andere Nationen erst im langsamen Entwickelungsprozess thaten. Der Herausgeber dieses Prachtwerkes war zehn Jahre abwesend von Ungarn; in dieser Zeit bereiste er die wichtigsten Punkte der Welt ; er sah die grossartige Entwickelung der modernen Kulturstaaten und siehe, als ér nach zehn Jahren wieder zurückkehrte, welche Überraschung ward ihm zu theil ! Auf jener Höhe sah er seine Nation, wo die anderen standen, die er bereiste ; er sah es, dass sich dieselbe mittelst ihrer eigenen innern Kraft, ihrer nationalen Tüchtigkeit und ihres schwungvollen Temperaments zu bedeutender Höhe erhob unter der glorreichen Regierung unseres geliebten Königs Franz Josef. Das wunderbare Aufblühen der Hauptstadt, ihre Bauten und Paläste und alles, was ein Land gross, glücklich und reich macht, sind heute zu finden in diesem Lande. Das alles hat den Verfasser dieser Zeilen dazu bewogen, dieses Prachtwerk herauszugeben anlässlich der denkwürdigen Ausstellung, wo die Nation alles entfalten wird, was sie Grosses produziren konnte. Er gibt dieses Prachtwerk heraus, unter Aegide des königlich ungarischen Handelsministeriums sowie der ung. Staatsbahnen und der Milleniums-Ausstehungs- Direktion, damit es, da die Sprache hierzu zu arm ist, mit Hilfe von getreuen Abbildungen dem Auslande zeigen soll, was eine Nation im Stande ist, wenn sie sich in so kurzen Decennien aufrafft. Sie mögen kommen, die Amerikaner, Deutschen, Engländer. Franzosen, Italiener und alle, die mit Recht stolz auf ihre alte Kultur sind und urtheilen über die Wunder der Milleniums-Ausstellung und die gewaltige Begabung der Nation, die sie ins Leben gerufen. r .. _ Julius Laurencic. MILLE ANNÉES! M ille années — c’est là un moment bien court dans la succession infinie des âges de l’Humanité, et cependant quelle époque colossale dans l’histoire d’une Nation ! Dix siècles se sont écoulés depuis que le peuple magyar, quittant ses premiers foyers et conduit par le grand fondateur de sa patrie, a pénétré dans la Hongrie — et voilà qu’aujourd’hui des millions de coeurs manifestent la joie la plus intense, la plus délirante, à la célébration des fêtes qui closent le premier millénaire de l’Etat hongrois. Et cette joie a bien sa raison d’être ! Si l’on parcourt l’histoire de ces dix siècles, partout on voit les nations succéder aux nations et plusieurs même d'entre elles sombrer dans de grands tourbillons. Des révolutions, des guerres extérieures, des luttes intestines ont ravagé bien des peuples et l’on peut même en nommer que ces bouleversements précipitèrent à bas du glorieux piédestal où ils s’étaient élevés. Au milieu de la tempête universelle, la Hongrie s’est pourtant maintenue debout, car sa puissance de vivre et de se développer était aussi résistante que vigoureuses étaient sa foi et son âme. Et pourtant, des guerres extérieures et civiles ont, à plusieurs reprises, éprouvé la nation magyare. Tour à tour dévasté par des ennemis extérieurs ou encore par ses propres enfants, le peuple hongrois n’en a pas moins conservé intacts sa nationalité, son culte patriotique et ses anciennes traditions. Il est vrai que ces luttes ont longtemps arrêté son développement et, pendant plusieurs siècles, frappé de stérilité sa force vitale . . . Eh, bien, malgré tout, la Hongrie a renversé les obstacles opposés à sa marche en avant, et ces derniers lustres ont été pour elle une période de merveilleux épanouissement. Depuis le moment où la nation a pu s’élancer hors du tombeau où elle était enfermée, elle marche à pas àe géant vers des idéals de civilisation et de bien-être, et aujourd’hui déjà elle peut soutenir la concurrence avec les autres nations. D’un seul coup, elle a effectué ce qu’un autre peuple n’avait pu atteindre que par un travail de plusieurs siècles. L’éditeur de cet ouvrage avait été absent de Hongrie dix années durant. 11 a parcouru les pays les plus civilisés îles deux Mondes, il a séjourné dans les villes les plus importantes et il a vu le progrès effectué par les grandes nations. Et voilà qu’en rentrant en Hongrie, il voit la nation magyare au même niveau que les autres, il constate qu’elle s’y est élevée parses propres forces et tout en conservant son individualité. Les splendeurs de la capitale de la Hongrie et des magnifiques régions qu’à chaque pas on rencontre dans les provinces, ont décidé l’auteur de ces lignes à publier cet Album à l’occasion de l’Exposition millénaire nationale. Ajoutons aussi que cet Album paraît sous le patronage et avec le bienveillant concours du Gouvernement royal hongrois, des Chemins de fer de l’Etat et de la Direction de l’Exposition millénaire. Comme aucune langue du monde ne serait capable d’exprimer convenablement l’importance des progrès réalisés par la Hongrie, l’auteur a eu recours à l’image pour présenter aux étrangers ce qu’une Nation remplie d’une noble ambition est capable de créer dans le court mais vertigineux délai de quelques décenaires. Que les étrangers accourent donc, quelles que soient leur nationalité et leur langue. Ils demeureront éblouis, stupéfaits, émerveillés à l’aspect de cette puissante et prodigieuse vitalité. Jules Laurencic. I THOUSAND YEARS! ^jlMiousand Years’ period is a very short one Jllfv in the everlasting course of the universe, TM but it is a gigantic epoch in the history of a nation. Ten vicissitudeful centuries have been running away since the noble Hungarian people leaved its ancient country and led by the great founder of the fatherland, crossed the frontier of this fairy land — and behold ! joyful are the million’s hearts now, witnessig the thousandth year. And right Hungarians are, for nations followed nations during these ten centuries and several of them had the lamentable destiny of being swept away by the time’s rushing impetuosity. Revolutions and civil wars ravaged the peoples and many of them have been precipitated from their apogee. Over the epoch’s ruines new epochs were built and the tomb of the nations served to the basis of the following ones. Steady however amidst the universal storm, upright stood Hungary and resisted bravely to thousands of catastrophes. Since the occupation — by Árpád — of this enchanting land, exterior and national wars cruelly hurt the Hungarian nation. Pillaged by foreign enemies (Turcs, Tartars etc.) and injured by the own compatriots, Hungarians always endeavoured to maintain their nationality and their ancient traditions. The steadfastness of the faith, the self-love and that of the fatherland made the country robust. True is however, that this continual struggle hindered its development and its vital force remained through centuriesstagnantand banen.Its industrie, trade, its art and literature stopped far behind the other european nations. But see ! Hungary made a supreme effort and repaired all in the last decennials. Since the great feature of the national resurrection Hungary very rapidly ascends and pushes resolutely forward on the way of the culture, progress and welfare, ideals of the Hungarian people, and Hungary now keeps pace with the other civilized nations. By means of a prodigious bound, never heard off, Hungarians could attain what another nation cannot reach, except with long and assiduous labour of several centuries. The publisher of this work has been for ten years away from this country. He travelled through the most civilized regions of the old and new world and witnessed the colossal progress of the leading nations, returned now in the payee and lo ! a very joyful surprise expected him. He saw the nation as high as the others, he saw, that this people reached its elevate position by keeping constantly the own national character and the own temperament. Trade, Industry, Literature and Arts are as florid as in other countries. Its magnificent metropolis with its superb modern structures, the splendid regions of its province and its grand institutions led the author of this lines to decide to publish the present portfolio, just when the Millenary Exhibition shows to the world all it can produce. He published this artistic work under the high Patronage of the Hung. Government and with the benevolent concours of the Hung. State Railways and the Management of the Exhibition. As language could not express sufficiently the degree of such a rapid, almost supernatural progress, he presents to the foreigners in pictures, what an ambitious and self-loveful nation is capable to create in the short space of some decennials. And now you may come from every part of the globe. While welcome in Old Hungary’s new Metropolis, you will be astonished and amazed at the view of such a mighty, prodigious vitality.
