negyedikként látta meg a napvilágot. Apja szobafestő volt, afféle amatőr mágus, aki elő tudta adni Houdini szenzációs menekülését a vízen úszó lezárt, meggyújtott ládából, amihez hasonlókkal manapság David Copperfield borzongatja a nézőket. Hogy mi vitte, mi hajtotta ezt a kamaszt, aki 16 évesen elhagyta családját, és kezdetben atyai örökségként szobafestésből élt, de már 18 évesen rendszeresen publikálta riportjait, írásait? Tíz éven keresztül írt napilapokba és magazinokba. Egy alapos kutatónak biztos adna hosszas munkát, hogy összeszedje a névvel, álnévvel, névtelenül itthon megjelent írásait. Mint ahogy német kutatók már megtették mindezt a Berliner Illustrirte Zeitung, a market, where else? The front part of the camera lens was missing of course, but the editor was pleased with the hazy, out of focus, mysterious pictures which conveyed the atmosphere of the funeral he had written about and photographed... It is a good story. But I would like to see someone try to remove this part of his camera, go and take pictures with it and give them to an editor. If he met with approval, he could surely be another MM! We still tell the story without thinking. Despite all this, his career flourished. Besides his early efforts to illustrate his reports, he experimented with portrait photography.
