0055013 OMgKDK Periodika Preface Institutional supervision of Hungarian research and development is shared among the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the Ministry of Culture and Education and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. It is not a question of debate that despite the apparent division, the objectives and tasks should be determined in a consistent way. Channels through which knowledge created in the scientific network can flow free without any obstacle should be developed and strengthened in order to give the opportunity for gathering of scattered sources. “ The need to concentrate the forces of research and development is emphasized by the fact that within a period of insignificant length in history till the accession to the EU, Hungary has to join to a system that is huge and powerful even on global level. Hungary’s accession has to be implemented in a way to enable Hungarian research suffering from disadvantages in competition due to the deficiencies and weak points it still has, to close up to European partners and find the role it deserves. Our main task is to reformulate and modernize the related objectives and tasks of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. Even our researcher staff - our main strength - has an “Achilles’ heel”, namely the lack of young and middleaged generations destined for taking over the tasks and securing the continuation in the future. Conditions offered by research stations are improving fast and the world became wide open in front of our young people by now. The time for regeneration has come. The improvement and renewal of technical background would require indefinable amount of financial resources, but time limit presses hard. Although the expression may sound as a cliché, when considering how to fill the blank hole in the current phase of development, it is the famous ‘Hungarian creativity and problem solving ability’ that we have to count on. In order to make research and development be able to help efficiently agricultural production and food industry eager for gathering new research results and information directly applicable in production, we have to devote great care to the efficient transmission of knowledge as well. In this process the support of entrepreneurial capital interested in progress cannot be disregarded. Accompanied by these thoughts we launch this publication about our 25 R&D institutions and non-profit organizations with the intention of giving proof to that our optimism concerning their preparedness for the international competition is not without any ground.
