12. OLDAL NEED CANADA FEAR THE USSR? (From an article by B. Isakov, Soviet journalist) The author of this article visited Canada in the thirties and is full of admiration for the country and its people, whom he remembers as »simple, energetic and hospitable people, who know how to value labor and peace.« People in the U.S. S.R. he adds, who have read about life in Canada, have a great deal of sympathy for the Canadians. This was deepened during the war, when the news of the courage and tenacity of Canadian soldiers become known in Russia. In the light of this wartime solidarity, especially, people in the USSR are perturbed by reports of warlike speeches and actions now coming from Canada. They are informed that numerous war bases, chiefly American, are being built on Canadian territory, and that Canadian and U. S. forces are constantly holding manoeuvres on Canadian territory, whilst reactionary circles in this country justify its militarization by the elegation that Canada is threatened by the USSR. Progress is not danger of war »We Soviet people, are accustomed to view things from a different angle. It is of course true that the progress of science and engineering has broguht continents closer together, and that the ice-bound Arctic expanses may be crossed by plane in a few hours. But we simply refuse to understand why progress should be indentified with the danger of new wars. We consider friendship among peoples a more reliable protection than the uncontrolled elements of the Arctic. It has never occured to us to regard the hist» rical flight of Chkalov and his daring friends, which ushered in a new era in Trans-Arctic communications, as anything else than a good-will flight.« Isacov goes on to explain that the Soviet Union has never commited an act of aggression, but that she has been repeatedly attacked by aggressors. He adds that the plain people of the USSR, like their counterparts in Canada, treasure peace and detest war, that they have a decisive word in shaping the policies of their country that they would never vote for a war of aggression. Moreover, since planned economy is the basis of all life in the USSR, and since any war would jeopardize the fulfillment of the state plan, which determ’nes the living standards of i the people, peace is also in the economic interest of the country. No vested interests exist, which could profit from government war orders, inflated stock exchange, rates or sky-rocketing prices. America prepares for aggressive war Another aspect of the news from Canada which is causing disturbance in Russia concerns repeated statemens by Canadian government officials that this country is ready to join the so-called »Atlantic Block.« In the USSR, this block, so far confined to five powers under the aegis of the U.S.A., is regarded as a military committee, that is, a joint staff of the five powers. »It is indeed hard to conceive that the generals and admirals of these powers will assemble at a staff conference to discuss the planting of olive groves or the cultivation of peace doves.« Isakov concludes by stressing that, although the ruling circles of Canada are joining with the forces threatening the USSR, such a policy accords least of all with the interests of the Canadian peoples. »...the Soviet people still refuse to believe that they may see the Canadian people in the camp of their enemies.« THU ( ...Ballet festival was a great cultural event, which after a week run ended last Saturday in Royal Alexandra theatre in Toronto. The Canadian research council has announced that Canada has a Cyclotrone (atom smasher) which costs only $50.000, cheaper and better than any the U.S. has produced. Now that’s something! Wait a minute... what’s this? The new cyclotrone was produced by following the instructions published by Soviet scientists in a Russian magazine... one year before our Ottawa »spy« show? Let’s see. . . weren’t those Rooshians supposed to lack the »knowhow« of splitting the atom ?... weren’t they supposed to be trying to steal our discoveries in that field? I guess I’ll have stop reading newspapers. — Ukrainian Canadian * * * No danger Patient: »I suppose the operation will be dangerous, doctor?« Doctor: »Nonsense. You couldn’t buy a dangerous operation for for' ty dollars.« Magyarországon bevezették az új iparos tanulókat védő törvényt (A »Szikra«, ifjúmunkás hetilap jelentése) Megszavazta az országgyűlés az iparostanulókat érintő új törvényjavaslatot, népi demokráciánk szerető gondoskodásának bizonyítékaként a magyar ifjúság iránt. Nem túlzok, ha azt mondom : tanoncfiatalságunk több évtizedes vágyálma teljesedett ezzel be.« SMILE True sayings A telephone pole never strikes an automobile except in selfdefence. * • • Proper Choice The motors of the airplane suddenly missed and stopped. JThe pilot, looking as brave as possible, walked back among the passengers and asked: »Is there anyone here who knows how to pray?« »I do, sir,« volunteered a minister. »Fine,« said the pilot. »You go ahead and pray while the rest of us strap on these parachutes.
