Károlyi Ernő festőművész kollázskiállítása (Kőbánya-Pataky Galéria, Budapest, 1985)

Ernő KÁROLYI born in 1923. 1946-51 studies at the Budapest Academy of Fine Arts under the direction of his masters János Kmetty, Róbert Berény, Bertalan Pór and István Szőnyi the early works show the marks of postimpressionism. These landscapes of sensitive colouring are rich in valeures and have a lyric overtone. Since the beginning of the sixties the experiences of Picasso and Braque, the international constructivism have been absorbed in his art. As a result of the above the forms are getting more and more geometric, the composition abandones the rules of central-perspective and the whole of his art tends towards the plane decorativity, keeping at the same time the means of varied, unusual colouring. Beside the paintings the collages constitute a considerable part of Ernő Károlyi’s oeuvre. The inventive formgiving draws together constructivistic and surrealistic features, as well. Similar artistic expression is appearing in his wooden marquetries and wall carpets, respectively. The wide range of possibilities given by the different materials results in enriched textures and compositions. The dominant part of the works shown in the present exhibition is made up by these collages recalling the scenes of fantastic landscapes and revealing absolutely abstract contacts of forms, as well.
