DAN GRAHAM’S TWO-WAY MIRROR AND HEDGE LABYRINTH 1992 SERPENTINE GALLERY LAWN MARCH 1992 - JANUARY 1993 The Two-Way Mirror and Hedge Labyrinth by Dan Graham, was erected on the Serpentine Gallery lawn in March 1992. It formed part of the exhibition Like Nothing Else In Tennessee - which explored references to architecture in recent contemporary art. Because the piece is one of the few existing pavilion works by Dan Graham, and has proved popular with visitors, it will be kept on the gallery lawn until January 1993. Dan Graham (born Illinois, 1942), first worked with performance art, video and photography to awaken viewers’ consciousness of architectural space. His recent sculptures take up a Modernist tradition of siting work within an architectural landscape. Graham makes use of the different material properties and reflective qualities of glass, incorporating it into sculptures in which the public becomes essential, through their continual presence and reflection. Unlike other artists working with the concerns of Minimalism, Graham’s work has always focused on the role of the spectator. The viewer becomes part of the work as does the ever-changing panorama of nature, all combining in a complex and reflective whole. Two-Way Mirror and Hedge Labyrinth can be seen on the Serpentine Gallery lawn daily between 10am and dusk, when the park closes to the public. It has been made possible by the Lisson Gallery, London. Tendercare Nurseries have kindly provided the blue Lawson cypress trees. The exhibition catalogue for Like Nothing Else in Tennessee is available from the Serpentine Gallery Bookshop. Price £4.50. In 1970, it was launched as an art gallery by the Arts Council of Great Britain, and it is currently funded by the Arts Council, Westminster City Council, sponsorship and donations. Average annual attendance for the last five years has been in the region of 170,000. Uniquely situated in a Royal park, the gallery is surrounded by gardens and is close to the Serpentine lake. The building retains much of its original character, and offers four finely proportioned spaces with an abundance of natural light. A lawn outside provides a further space for the occasional showing of sculpture, or the staging of performance events. The programme of exhibitions aims to continue a tradition of recognising the achievement of established British artists while reflecting new international developments and presenting work by younger artists. Admission is free and the gallery is easily accessible by public transport (see map). The galleiy is open daily, except during the installation of exhibitions. School and other group visits are welcomed and can be arranged on request.
