Középeurópa Fényműhely (Budapest, 1998)

The present catalogue is intended to document the 1998 artists' camp and course of the Central Europe Light Workshop. The Central Europe Light Workshop was formed in 1996 by fine artists and cinematographers. Its objective is to facilitate co-operation between young artists at the beginning of their carriers and older, more experienced artists, creating a community and developing a new conception of art and art education. The word „light" in the name firstly refers to the preferred artistic methods of the group - many of them use photography, film and some are active in the area of electrographics alongside the traditional techniques of fine art - and secondly it is intended to emphasise the optimism and youthful experimentation - though not amateurism - that characterises the group. Since the beginning of 1997, the group has been operating as a society. Its chairman is the sculptor András Huber, vice-chairperson is the electrographic artist Borbála Kováts, with the photo and cinema artist László Csáki and a student of the history of art, András Húber Jr„ the other members of its board. The majority of the present 28 members are from Győr, but the participants came from various regions of the country, and some foreign artists from Slovakia, Romania and also Finland also belong to the group. However, the events organised by the Central Europe Light Workshop are not intended only for the members, as it continuously involves people with similar ideas in its work. On those occasions, place of residence, age and nationality are of no consequence.
