Parallels (Bratislava and the Hungarian, 2010)

We launched my class at the Department of Painting of the Bratislava Academy of Fine Arts and Design in 2001. It was called "Atelier 4" because there were already three different approaches - and more importantly approaches different from that of the new class - present in the department. A new approach with a new generation made for a promising start. The word 'generation' is also important because painting was not the strong point of the younger generation in Slovak art in the 1990s. As for approach, the teaching conception of the class right from the beginning was to engage with the understanding, grasping and - in another sense - the use of painting after the spread into general use of the computer. Addressing these issues gave a new impulse to painting, internationally as well. Our new generation appeared with confidence at Slovak exhibitions after 2000 and most ofthem came from the 'Atelier 4' like Dávid Baffi, Andrea Bartosová, Roman Bicék, Michal Czinege, Michal Cernusák, Ludmila Hrachovinová, Juliana Mrvová, Rastislav Sedlacik and Erik Sille, who is today taking part at the exhibition as my assistant. In 2009 this group produced the class's big retrospective exhibition at the Bratislava Kunsthalle and many of these now successful artists still keep in touch with Atelier 4. Here we are introducing a "new team" given that approaches of the current students are different from those of their predecessors. In a certain sense they have helped reorganize teaching too in that they have appeared with new 'materials' and new 'nourishment' - providing me too with new impulses. Even the visual appearance of work itself has changed. The use of tools has changed, the "more" has changed to less, the lack has multiplied, introversion has replaced the stress on the universal and stress on the individual has begun to appear in increasingly strong terms in their works...Ayoung student of mine said: "...study as a game"..." I am happythat I can take part in the game! ...in the group game. Which is about the dialogue between two groups of the same generation. The students completely took over the project which started at the initiative of the two university rectors and the exhibition is the result of their cooperation. I believe this is an extraordinary event that deserves to be continued in that instead of the pressure to conform to the expectations of the inbred domestic art scene and comparisons with the international world, a work process has finally appeared that is about intensely observing each other within the region. A common way of thinking that has brought spectacular results. Parallels in painting which attimes complement each other in terms of style, theme, mood, approach, and the use oftools and materials. The exhibition opens at 6 PM on 28th January 2010 at the Barcsay Hall of the Hungarian University of Fine Arts. The exhibition will be opened by Prof. Karol Weisslechner akad. Arch., Rector of the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava and Prof. Dr habil. Frigyes König D.L.A., Rector of the Hungarian University of Fine Arts.
