-Művész úr, kérem, tessék szíves lenni olyan önkarika Continuing his series of articles László Dalos first recalls his meetings with Sándor Svéd, the leading Hungarian baritone of his time. He first saw and heard him singing in 1935 in the picture Halló, Budapest! in a suburban cinema. Svéd who was in his early thirties sang the entrance aria of Figaro of the Barber of Seville with the piano accompaniment of György Kosa. He did not know at that time that Kosa was an excellent composer as well whose comic opera Those Two Knights was produced by the Opera House next year. László Dalos mentions that further operas of the composer are still hidden in libraries waiting for their production; such are The Robe of the King, Cenodoxus, The Student Anselmus, The Bees, and Tartuffe, the latter one based on the play of Moliére. He next remembers Eszter Réthy who was born the same year (1912) as Márta Eggerth and Lívia Dobay but was known perhaps to a lesser extent than her colleagues mentioned above though in 1965 she still appeared as Eve in the Mastersingers of Nuremberg. She had been member of the Opera House from 1933 to 1937, then she was “snatched away” by Vienna but in the 1942/1943 season she again appeared several times at Budapest. Eszter Réthy had sung the parts of the heroine of Orfeo, an opera by Monteverdi, of Anne in the Freeshooter, Marcellina in Fidelio (as a matter of fact it was this role which drew the attention of Erwin Kerber, director of the Vienna Staatsoper to her). She reaped her first success in Vienna as Margaret in the opera Faust, and later was applauded in Salzburg as Susanne and again in the Vienna Staatsoper as Mimi in La Boheme the stage director of which was another Hungarian: Kálmán Nádasdy. She appeared all over the stages of Europe in roles of operas by Mozart, Richard túrát is adni meg autogramot... -Nem adok! - dörrent rám a zengő baritonhang. Ez a tagadás csak a rajzra vonatkozott, a nevét azért leírta, ma is megvan. Pontosan egy évtizeddel később, 1949-ben, a Rádió büféjében. Ugyanaz a bariton, de most szélesen, jókedvűen. Lendvai Andor, 1949. Na tessék, megint egy régi baritonista! A PROPOS - Opera! Lendvai Andor önkarikatúrája, „fejében” az ajánlás OPERAÉLET 2002. 17 ÖTÖDIK SZÁM
