O critică „judecătoreascăC oncepţiile critice şi estetice ale lui Titu Maiorescu s-au bucurat în epocă de o audienţă cu un spectru foarte larg şi divers. Contemporanii fondatorului „Junimii”, divizaţi în adulatori/ discipoli şi adversari ideologici au văzut în acesta fie pe liderul de necontestat al unei „direcţiei noi”, obligatoriu de urmat, fie pe cel mai însemnat partener de polemică. Titu Maiorescu a intrat în istorie odată cu primul său gest cultural public. A avut avantajul unei poziţii sociale care i-a permis să-şi pună în practică vocaţia de întemeietor şi să-şi susţină punctele de vedere, nu de puţine ori, incomode. A mai avut de partea sa multe dintre atributele intelectualului desăvârşit. Nu în ultimul rând, a fost cel care a declanşat „prima bătălie canonică” din istoria literaturii române. Meritele sale au fost subliniate de majoritatea cercetătorilor interesaţi de natura, instituirea şi metamorfoza spiritului critic în spaţiul românesc. S-a discutat cu pasiune despre actualitatea lui Maiorescu, despre moştenirea lăsată posterităţii, despre necesitatea revenirii la el. His aesthetic ideas have not remained in the field of abstract speculations, as they have influenced and shaped the artistic conscience of numerous writers. The present study aims to be a reconstruction of Maiorescu’s aesthetic ideology, comprising also one of the first poetics of the novel in Romanian literature. The theory of the „poporan“ („people-oriented“), novel has a special importance in the history of the theoretical development of the hereby discussed literary genre, despite the fact that it has been severely and rightfully contested. Even though the poetics of the novel has not evolved in the direction indicated by the critic, Maiorescu’s critical and theoretical attitude has had an essential contribution to the generation and designing of one of the most ample and intense debates in the history of Romanian literature.
