CONTENTS Dr. F. Varga: The present situation of the development of cupolas....................................................P 2 By mechanizing the charing procedure, using water-jacket cooling, an adequate wind supply and high quality coke the cold wind cupola has become a melting furnace which satisfies all actual industrial requirements. Blowing with hot windfurnishesahigherfurnace temperature, a hotter liquid iron and a higher output with lower coke consumption and a reduction of melting loss. This leads to a reduction of melting costs. L. Kovács: The thermal and material balance of domestic hot wind cupolas.......................................P 3 The author describes the stoves used with cupolas and summarizes the main data of the thermal and material balance of domestic hot wind cupolas. He stresses the importance of instrumented monitoring, modern charging and continuous tapping in order to realize a uniform and optimal working of the cupola. time of scab formation; however, a well-defined relationship was established between the results of hot tests and pouring time. M. Pető: On (ho economic problems of (he relationship between foundries and (he engineering industry .................................................................................. P lit The first part of the paper describes the situation of the engineering industry within the people’s economy and the significance of castings in the material consumption of the engineering industry. On (he basis of an analysis of the relationship between foundries and the engineering industry the specific character of castings as merchandise is determined together with their technical-economical and social use-value. The development of the use-values of castings according to finishing and material quality is discussed together with their effect on the engineering industry. The basic causes of the present unfavourable situation are stated to stem from the problems of the prices of castings. The second part of the paper describes the development of the price system for iron and steel castings and proves by a detailed critique of the method of price establishment for iron castingsarid of the contents of this system that the system of casting prices prevents an increase of the usevalue of castings with finishing and material quality, raising the technical level of foundries and the development of foundry technology. The reform of the system of economic control has brought the tensions and problems to t lie "foureground. Finally the economic necessity of a re-establishment of casting prices is studied and methods for this end are mentioned. /. Lantos: Testing foundry sand mixtures, with special regard to the determination of the critical time of pouring....................................................................P 11 The author discusses the faults of dilatation due to heating in the sand mixtures of green sand forming and their mechanism of formation, seeking a relationship between the variation of composition of the sand mixtures and the trend to faults. In addition to the traditional laboratory tests he has carried out hot and casting tests. No definite relationship has been found between the results of traditional room-temperature tests and the
