OLDAL A magyar ifjúság koncertet rendezett a béke érdekében — Durovecz András jelentése — Toronto magyarsága pompás műsoros estét élvezett május 25-én, vasárnap este a Labor Lyceumban, amit a demokratikus szervezetek, a Kossuth B. Egylet (IMEF) fiókja, a Demokratikus Magyar Egylet, az Ady Ifjúsági és Női Csoport közösen rendeztek a prágai nemzetközi ifjúsági ünnepélyre utazó két kanadai magyar ifjú delegátus költségeinek támogatására. A nagyszerű műsorszámokat teljes egészében az Ady Ifjúsági Csoport állította elő. A változatosan összeállított műsorszámokat az ifjúsági zenekar nyitotta meg az O’ Canada és a magyar himnusszal s utána félórás magyar és angol zeneszámokkal kötötte le a közönséget Oriold József karmester vezetése mellett. Szőke Ha, mint számos esetben, megszokott kedvességgel adott elő egy szavalatot. Kellemes hangjával újra kitett magáért Hossó Béla, aki dalait saját maga kísérte mandolinnal. Ezen az estén bővelkedtünk tornamutatvány számokban. Czeglédi Rózsi vezetése alatt a Demokratikus Egylet ifjú és gyermektagokból álló tornacsoportja épített látványos piramisokat és mutatott be nyaktörő bukfenceket. Korányi Edit és Bank Edit páros mutatvánnyal teremtettek derűs hangulatot. Majd Czeglédi Rózsi, a testkultúra egyik legjobb magyar reprezentánsa tornaszólóval kedveskedett. Guriel Ciprian Papp Eta , zongorakíséretében, míg ök■ rös Tibor Barta Elza zongorakísérete mellett adtak elő kellemes hegedűszámokat.A közönség tetszését váltotta ki Guriel Ilonka énekszámaival, aki első fellépése után nagyszerű műkedvelőnek kínálkozik, akinek az ügyes zongorakíséretet Czeglédi Béla adta. A három párból álló tánccsoport, egy argentínai tangóval keltett színes jelenetet, amit meg kellett ismételniük. A táncosok Petró Irén, Kovács Bözsi, Kovács Etel, Kollár Irén és Hordiechuk Anna voltak. A műsort a közönség viharos tapsai mellett Papp Eta, kiváló zongoratehetség Liszt Ferenc 15. rapszódiájával zárta be. E kulturest méltán megfelelt annak a célnak, amire rendezve volt, a prágai ifjúsági világtalálkozóra készülő delegátusok segítésére. A prágai ifjúsági ünnepély jelentőségét e sorok írója ismertette rövid beszédben, kifejtve azt, hogy a Demokratikus Ifjúság Világszövetsége, mely e nemzetközi összejövetelt rendezi, az egész világ ifjúságának béketalálkozóját rendezi meg. Az egy hónapos nagy ünnepély, ahol sportversenyek, különböző színpadi versenyek, művészeti kiállítások, valamint a különböző országok ifjúságának a béke érdekében kifejtett tevékenységét illusztráló anyagok lesznek kiállítva, az ifjúság békés barátságának a demonstrációja lesz. Lesznek bizonyára sokan az ifjak között, akik még két évvel ezelőtt a csatamezőkön halálos ellenségként néztek farkasszemet egymással,míg most barátságos kézszorítással fogják egymást üdvözölni. S amíg sok demokratikus ország delegációja a kormány egyenes segítségével utazik az ifjúság békeösszejövetelére, addig a kanadai kormány nem hajlandó semmiféle segítséget nyújtani a készülő kb. 200 tagú kanadai delegációnak, ahelyett kötelező kadetképzést vezetnek be a kanadai iskolákban. Ezért elítéljük a Drew és Duplessis-féle vörösfalókat, akik minden demokrat Szabó László a nemzetközi sakkbajnok BUDAPEST • Az áprilisban Bécsben lezajlott nemzetközi sakkversenyt Szabó László, Magyarország sakkbajnoka, a kommunista Szabad Nép napilap sakkrovatának vezetője nyerte meg. Jól szerepelt a verseny két másik magyar résztvevője, Gereben és Kovách is. Előzőleg a magyar-osztrák válogatottat nyerte meg a magyar sakkcsoport. BUDAPEST: A Nagybátony Újlaki Téglagyárban nehezen dolgoznak, de bíznak benne, hogy a 3 éves terv megvalósítása jólétet teremt. Chinese Students Condemn Civil War SHANGHAI — Students in ten Peiping universities called a city-wide demonstration of 15,000 classmates and planned to enroll workers and transportation employees throughout the country in a general strike June 2 protesting the continued Chinese civil war. The action was announced as the Nationalist positions in the Changchum area became Tmcertain because of encircling liberation forces and as 'continued large student demonstrations against the civil strife continued in Shanghai and Nanking despite a ban by Chiang Kai- Shek. Protest Manhandling Some 22,000 students were stating their mass protest parades in Nanking, Shanghai, Peiping and Tientsin demanding larger living allowances and protesting the manhandling of student demonstrators by Chinese soldiers. Peiping students announced their move was »against the ruination of China through civil war.« Posters announced the students’ incensed attitude toward what they alleged were atrocities in Sunday’s clash with Chinese soldiers in which eight students were injured, including one girl. Six-thirty Sunday night a truck stopped in front of our hall and waited while 35 dirty, wet, dishevelled figures jumped off the truck. The refrains of WE ARE HERE BECAUSE WE ARE HERE were somewhat inauditable, nevertheless cheerful. Believe it or not what we represented were the same youth but -, ... . share of thev dav’s dier-they now had a day out at Pickering. They might call this the land of milk and honey but to us it seems as this place was only good enough for ducks. The perpetual sound of rain has become a natural drumming in my ear. The first obstacles which confronted us when we arrived at Pickering was the absence of shovels. But before I could even think of an alternative two younger girls were sawing and our junior trio Bimbo Czegledi, Julius Bellák and Jimmy (bing) Kiss were helping to move boards for our bathing house. Margaret Kopi, Alice Barta were helping the women who made the most appetizing dish of székelygulyás. Ted ökrös was helping to wire the main cabin and us girls sure missed the assisting help of Ted. His view goes something like this »Dig yourself a hole and then spread out.« Fine, Ted, but what can you do when the ground refuses 'to give up all the roots and stones and Julia Kanyó or Betty Koncz always land up right in your path. Still more depressing was the idea that the minute you dropped your spade to take a smoke someone would slyly go off with it and then you started to look for an available spade. Steve Kiss states (this is official) that if he worked steady for two months he could have dug this himself. Anyone willing to take him up on his word? We were surprised and pleased to see one of our delegates to Prague Johnny Szicsák and his wife Betty out there. He was looking so empty handed, that we immediately took pity on him and placed a spade in his hands. Among the many surprising sights there were Mrs. Barcsák behind a spade, and the fact that Johnny Sepajak was out there (and I am told he has made up for lost time). As usual the Czeglédi family was out in full force and kept us in good humour. As well as helping with the cooking Mrs. Czeglédi did her share of they day’s digging. Or course I mustn’t forget Margaret Telek who I am sure practiced at home during the week as to-day she was the envy of all the girls. You too would be envious if you would seen the swing she uses to get rid of the dirt. The canal would of been entirely finished if there had been enough shovels and like this there is a few hours of work still to do. The Monday after the Munkás picnic we will finish the job. As soon as possible we are moving the Bulldozers down to Welland as we hear there is some work to be done. I almost forgot to mention a small, insignificant detail. It rained all day we were out. Not the occasional drop or two but a steady down pour. We were soaked to the flesh coming home on the truck. Tery and Olga did well as they were in the front with George Ganyu our driver. We greatly appreciate his driving us out as well as for three days of working on the canal. Besides the sore backs next week I am afraid I will be in the large group of pneumonia victims. Annie Répás, Margaret K6pi, my sister and I were doing our utmost to hold the canvas down and in doing so drenched ourselves. The kids are all excited and are waiting eagerly for our christening. The crowd of Ady Bulldozers will be heard for miles around when the dam is broken and the water slowly makes its way to the end of the canal and out to the main stream. From this time on we will know what work means and we. .. what Steve ? In Steve Kiss’s own words quote work begins with .a w and ends with a sore back unquote. Webster I am sure will never accept this but for the time being it is good enough for us. Our club is preparing for the coming Munkás picnic in Niagara Falls and is planning to have all our members present. Watch out, Niagara Falls, here we come! — minus our shovels of course. EZEK a japán táncosnők, egy színtársulat tagjai, részt vettek a Tokióban megrendezett május 1-i ünnepélyen, amelyen több, mint 400.000 munkás jelent meg. A japán munkásság kulturális fejlődését gátló akadályok egy része szét van törve, most azon van, hogy a másik részét is széttörje.
