Katolikus Szemle 8. (1956, Róma)

2. szám

SUMMARY In this summer issue of the KATOLIKUS SZEMLE a hymn « To the Midday Angelus» of Márton Hegyi recalls the famous victory of Nándorfehérvár (1456) — for the midday Angelus has its origin in a special peal, ordered at that time by Pope Callixtus III to call people to pray for the liberation of the western world from the Turkish army of Sultan Mahomet — and apostrophizes the Angelus bell asking it to gather all Hungarians around the world to pray and work for the freedom of our country. As this year there is being celebrated the fourth centenary of the death of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, Tibor Horváth draws the spiritual figure of the soldier saint, pointing out especially the active character of his mystical love of God. The noble and strong figure of the eighty-year-old German Chancellor, Conrad Adenauer, is presented by Miklós Boér Sr., who shows how a Christian outlook and western, conservative, national, democratic governement are happily joined in his rule. Explaining the main ideas of a work of a small group of Italian philosophers concerning the problem of the soul in religion and philosophy, Dezső Demecs, this time, gives a short synthesis of this doctrine as taught by the Old and New Testaments, and by the Koran. László Tóth presents selected poems of an inedited volume of a young poet, Béla Küry, who died this year in Rome. We print also — introduced by the reflexions of Kristóf Hites — selections of a remarkable new historical novel of István Eszterhás. The story, narrating the quarrels and the solidarity of Hungarian soldiers of different social classes in a Turkish prison, after being led into an ambush by the enemy, shows the way for Hungarians of today how to work together with Christian generosity and love of their own people despite of all ideological and social differences. A description of the decorations of the famous neo-gothic building of the Houses of Parliament in Budapest, especially the fresco representing the victory of Nándorfehérvár, is given by Ferenc Bíró. We write in memory of two outstanding members of the Hungarian clergy who died recently: of the Archbishop of Eger, Gyula Czapík, president of the board of Hungarian bishops; and of Fr. Sándor Horváth O. F., the excellent thomist philosopher and theologian, late professor of the University of Fribourg in Switzerland. In our reviews Miklós Pécsi gives a detailed account of the Easter and 1st of May allocutions of the Holy Father; Dénes Nemestóthy analyses the recent offensive of Soviet diplomacy; Imre Várady writes about the second edition of the new Hungarian version of the New Testament, about the historical work of Tamás Bogyay and a recent edition of short stories of László Cs. Szabé. Other book-reviews and news of the life of the Church around the world complete this issue. KIADÓHIVATALUNKBAN BESZEREZHETŐ KÖNYVEK BEKÉS-DALOS: Újszövetségi Szentirás.
