FERENC VADAS: PLANS FOR LÁGYMÁNYOS There have always been grandiose plans for this area. This plain, located south of Gellérthegy and west of the Danube, was not built up for a long time and practically offered itself for grand-scale development plans. The first plans were prepared before the unification of the city. Lipót Varásdy’s design of 1868 involved a grid system of streeets with two main roads running from north to south and from east to west. Their junction formed a main square and there were landscaped areas scattered about. Neither this grid plan nor its concentrical alternative was ever realized and the more schematic development plan of the Council of Public Work was also put off indefinitely. The area had been practically inaccessible until the Ferenc József (now Szabadság) bridge was built, its development began only at the very end of the 19th century. Until that time the regulation of the river was the only activity in the area. When the southern railway bridge was built, a bottleneck formed in the Danube and the backwater behind the kilometer long embankment was not filled up for a long time. The large lake turned into a swamp during the following years and remained undisturbed until the 1930s. There were plans to utilize the area of the “Lágymányos puddle” as a port, first the whole area was considered, later only the part south of the bridge in order not to cut off the district from the river. For the Millennium (1896) -instead of the whole exhibition- a strange entertainment district was built here: “Constantinople in Budapest”. At this time it was very fashionable to supplement big exhibitions with nostalgic and cheap Potemkin-towns, such as Alt-Wien or Vieux Paris, which were supplementary entertainment centres for the serious program. A more important building work took place at the turn of the century when the technical university was located here. At that time a rapid development began in the area, first only at the foot of Gellérthegy by Átlós (now Bartók Béla) út. The plans included -besides development plans and suggestions for land use- the design of actual buildings as well. A design competition by the Society of Hungarian Engineers and Architects in 1923/24 set the task of designing a permanent exhibition hall in this area. A conservative architecture of period-style was characteristic of the designs at that time: the drawings of the Lágymányos open-air swimming pool by Suppinger show a building complex of mixed Baroque and Classical characteristics. A much more up-to-date design was made by Hugó Pál in 1928. He rejected the historical style and designed a public bath instead of a luxury one, with a capacity of30 000 visitors. Klebelsberg, who was Minister of Education, wanted to develop a university campus here complete with research institutes, a museum and a botanical garden. This program was drawn up by Móric Pogány. After 1945, the university function came to the fore. The technical university expanded right up to the bridge at the beginning of the 1950s, the other side was to be the location of an independent university of the building industry. There was a design competition for this new building complex in 1953 which was won by Weichinger with Rimanóczy as second. This plan wasn’t realized either and the development of the area south of the Petőfi bridge hasn’t taken place up to now. Ekkortájt divat volt a nagy kiállítások mellett, velük kapcsolatosan nosztalgikus-giccses potemkin-városok emelése (Alt-Wien, Vieux-Paris), melyek a komoly rendezvényt kiegészítő szórakoztató centrumként mű LÁGYMÁNYOSI TERVEK íjoiHmii'i «плотите pízabályozási' terve * krv.ul üilávi.ái a lrfwril.tr« * Kolbenheyer és Straub tervét Id.
