sich, Ödön Krompecher became world-famous. Of the professors of internal medicine the two Korányis should be mentioned in the first place: Frigyes Korányi, Sándor Korányi. János Bókay senior was the creator of the Hungarian school of pediatrics. His work was continued by his son, János Bókay junior. Jenő Pólya, Géza Illyés, Emil Gross, József Imre junior, Vilmos Tauífer, József Fodor were outstanding in their respective fields. Of the professors of pharmacology the name of Lajos Winkler should be underlined here, in dentistry Döme Nedelko, József Árkövy were out standing. The peaceful conditions of work, the hitherto best conditions for the development of our Faculty of Medicine were created by the liberation of our country. The Faculty of Medicine started from the bottom on the ladder of development in 1945. Our buildings were greatly destroyed during the war. Many of them were in ruins, not even one remained intact. There was no electricity, gas, heating, water, we lacked essential foodstuffs and the major part of equipment had disappeared as well. In spite of these difficulties rebuilding of the Faculty of Medicine was started with great enthusiasm. As soon as the 10th day following the liberation of the capital on the 24th February 1945 the Faculty of Medicine held its first Session of its Council and decided on starting work in all the institutes and clinics. This was really achieved on the 16th of April, 12 days following the complete liberation of the country. The Faculty of Medicine opened its doors for the students and teaching was started in the institutes operaring at that time. We can speak of “our university” from 1951 on because on the 1st February 1951 the independent University of Medicine of Budapest was founded from the Faculty of Medicine of the University Eötvös Loránd. The University was divided into 3 Faculties in August 1955: Faculty of General Medicine, of Dentistry and of Pharmacy. Since that day the University has been working in its present system of organization. I feel compelled to express our esteem and sympathy toward our common Alma Mater, the University of Sciences Loránd Eötvös. The nearly 180 years spent together as one member of the big family covers a huge historical period, with deep changes in social structure and social systems. We went together all this long way, our problems were common, and so were our joys. Thanks and fraternal greetings to the University of Sciences Eötvös Loránd. We belong together in spite of our independence in organization. The transformation hastened our development. The university underwent quick growth. New departments, institutes and clinics were being organized in accordance with the increasing demands of science and society. While in 1945 the Faculty of Medicine had 26 departments, today training is going on in 48 departments of our three Faculties. At the time of the liberation we had 625 medical posts, now the number of teachers amounts to 1,200. At the present stage of our development our main problems are mainly due to problems this expansion gave rise to. Speaking of the development of the university in the last 25 years we do not consider the incerease of the number of students, teachers or institutes as the most important indices. The most important change in the life of the university is the fact, that we were able to follow the deep structural changes of society, and we suceeded in becoming a socialistic university out of the feudalistic university of the Horthy regime.
